IIT Bhilai started its new department in Mechatronics Engineering in the year 2022 with all three programs: BTech, MTech and PhD. Our stimulating Mechatronics programs combine electrical, electronic, data science and mechanical engineering to address the challenges of designing and deploying intelligent technologies.
The opportunity to design a new engineering program does not come often. A group of professors from Mechanical Engineering, Data Science Engineering, and Electrical & Computer Engineering set out to design our 'ideal' Mechatronics curriculum. With a virtual clean slate, a set of courses was selected from the three engineering departments that would provide students with the desired combination of skills.
This curriculum seeks for students who seek to contribute at the interface between manufacturing, electrical, mechanical, and computing areas in primarily industrial environments. When our students study mechatronics engineering technology, they focus on the development of the electromechanical products that are ubiquitous in modern life, dealing with interconnections that allow electronic control of mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
Through our curriculum students will also experience in a range of integrated system issues through project work. Graduates of the programme will have the blend of mechatronic and software integration skills required for successful careers in robotics, in all forms of transport, in medical technologies, in advanced manufacturing, in research and development remote sensing, big data analytics, human-machine interactions, and in product design.
With this vision we have started our ambitious journey with a close family of 16 BTech students, 5 MTech students and 4 PhD students in its very first year. It is the beginning of our journey, yet we know that within few years from now our students, our future mechatronics engineer will be changing the world by:

• Leveraging artificial intelligence in autonomous vehicles and robotics
• Designing and implementing robotic control systems
• Designing and creating of wearable devices for medical applications
• Developing of next-generation additive manufacturing (3D Printing) systems
• Developing advanced prosthetics for amputees
• Data driven modelling of materials
• Applying AI for medical diagnostics
• Mechatronics for sustainable environment
