Easy and Green Method for the Synthesis of Alkylated Nitriles
A simple and easy-to-use process for the manganese-catalyzed green and sustainable -alkylation of nitriles with alcohols was developed by researchers in the Department of Chemistry, IIT Bhilai. Alkylated nitriles are considered an important structural backbone of various natural products and biologically relevant drug molecules, and pharmaceuticals. The reaction employs readily available nitriles and naturally abundant alcohols, which can be obtained from biomass, as the reaction partners in the presence of cheap and earth-abundant manganese catalyst. Interestingly, the methodology is a green process since the water was produced as the byproduct. The entire research work was supervised by Dr. Arup Mukherjee, an Assistant Professor at IIT Bhilai. This work is also highlighted as a journal cover feature.
