Smart Materials for Controlled Delivery of Anti-cancer Drug

As per World Health Organization (WHO) data, cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, accounting for an estimated 9.6 million fatalities, which is nearly one in every six deaths in 2018. Globally, the burden of cancer is still increasing, exerting enormous physical, psychological, and financial strain on people, families, communities, and health systems. Controlled delivery of anti-cancer drug, doxorubicin offers a range of benefits that can contribute to more effective, targeted, and personalized cancer treatment, while minimizing side effects and improving patient outcomes. In order to achieve controlled delivery of anti-cancer drug, intelligent drug delivery vehicles must be designed. This is essential for delivering anti-cancer drugs to enhance the effectiveness of treatment while minimizing potential side effects. However, currently available drug delivery vehicles come with several disadvantages and challenges such as limited payload capacity, high cost and lack of target specificity. The research team led by Dr. Sanjib Banerjee at the Dept. of Chemistry, IIT Bhilai has developed a new multi-stimuli responsive smart material for anti-cancer drug delivery. This work provides a cost-effective and facile access to smart anti-cancer drug delivery vehicles.
